When a furnace maintenance is performed a combustion analysis should be performed to identify any problems that couldn't be found by a visual inspection. You want to know what the Carbon monoxide level your furnace is producing as well as the oxygen/CO2 levels and stack temperate. The analyzer will also give you a calculated efficiency rating with the information the analyzer receives. You should have >100ppm of Carbon monoxide output during normal operation of your gas furnace. When you have higher numbers or CO numbers increasing during operation their is a problem with the furnace the technician should then find the cause of. This is just a brief explanation I'm trying to get across to those who get their furnace maintained and to those who don't! Check to see if anyone in the company has a NCI certification for carbon monoxide/combustion analysis.
• Furnace is making more noise because it’s turning on and off more frequently. It may need repair, may not have been sized properly to fit the needs of your house, or may not have the airflow available that it needs from the ducts. The ducts are most often the culprit. Sometimes adding a cold air return can solve this. Ensure your vents are all open. If you are closing off vents in your house this can contribute to the issue.
Whatever type of system you have, don't wait until it breaks down to do DIY furnace maintenance. A clean, well-adjusted heating system will save you money on fuel and prolong furnace life. Annual servicing is cheap—typically less than $100—especially when compared with the price of a new furnace. "You wouldn't wait more than a year to service your car," Richard says. "The heat in your house is just as important."
Furnace tune ups should take anywhere from 45 minutes to hour and a half, depending on what the technician has to deal with when he gets there. I was a heating and AC professional for over 10 years and I had tune ups that only took me 30 minutes, and others where it seemed like I had to practically disassemble the entire furnace, clean, then put back together. Every call is unique. However, it's important you trust your contractor. Your instincts are more accurate than you probably give yourself credit for. I don't remember a tune up ever going less than a 1/2 hr in my 10 years of experience. It just takes time to setup, take down, and perform the actual maintenance. If you figure a minute per inspection point, it should have at least taken half an hr. I've showed up to furnaces that look flawless, and I still take them apart and clean them because that's what the homeowner paid me for. If there is even a hint of a cracked heat exchanger, get a second opinion. There are scams out there, and unfortunately a 20 minute inspection wouldn't reveal that. Have whomever is making the claim show you via camera or by physically removing the combustion chamber from the furnace and showing you. As weird as that sounds, I've removed heat exchangers out of furnaces just to prove that there was an issue. A cracked combustion chamber can be a serious issue, so the fact that he said it should be fine says either he doesn't know what he's doing or he's not being truthful, or both. It's not that cracked heat exchangers are leaking carbon monoxide, it's that they can. It's the potential that makes it dangerous. Hope this helps!

The oil filter (found in oil-powered systems only) prevents small impurities from clogging the oil-burner nozzle, which could result in a misfire that shuts down the system. Richard first closes the oil valve, then removes the old filter and replaces it, setting aside the dirty filter to be disposed of according to local hazardous-waste regulations.

CM Heating performed a Gas Furnace Diagnostic. Customer wanted his echo bee thermastat installed that he had bought himself. Furnace was working fine just wanted his thermastat installed. He thought that the $99 service fee was going to cover that but explained to him what the service fee was for, and explained that there is a additional install fee for the stat. Customer didn’t want to pay the additional fee so I called the office had them listen to the call to make sure we explained to the customer correctly and to see how they would like me to proceed. So I quoted the customer the fee to install the thermostat but he didn’t want us to install it so I left.

Your HVAC system is an important appliance with a limited lifetime. Depending on use, with regular maintenance you can expect your furnace and air conditioner to last between 8-18 years before you will need to replace the old one. However, poor maintenance is one of the primary reasons for early replacement HVAC systems ahead of end of average life expectancy.

• If your furnace is inside the house, it may be located in an area that is magnifying the sound it makes – such as under a staircase. Often moving the furnace to another part of the house can reduce that noise. You may find that it’s in an area that was previously occupied by another older type of furnace, and you never heard those sounds from that one. Please keep in mind that modern furnaces are built differently – with multiple speeds and stages – which may create different sounds and require more airflow than your old ductwork has available. If the furnace doesn’t get enough air, it gets cranky.
Wonder how much Festool is paying Silva to showcase their outrageously expensive line of tools. He used practically the entire product line on this project that was nothing more than a Festool commercial. I guess the brad nailer company didn't offer any kickbacks to the crew because you never saw their brand name. This show has turned into nothing more than crass commercialism. And when did Silva become a 'master carpenter'. He can't hold a candle to Abrams. Never could. But he's definitely better at milking the sponsors. Would love to see the inside of his workshop.

Great article! I am having trouble identifying what to use for the aluminum or zinc strips to prevent organic growth and staining. How wide are the strips? Are they predrilled? I am starting to see black stains on the north facing asphalt shingles. Do you recommend treating that befor adding the metal strips? If so, 50/50 bleach and water or a commercial product?
