In the combustion chamber, fuel mixes with air and is ignited, generating heat—as well as carbon soot, water vapor, carbon dioxide, and worse. A buildup of soot can cause the chamber walls to corrode. Richard scrapes out built-up carbon using a small wire brush. Then he removes loose material with an industrial shop vacuum and inspects the chamber for holes or corrosion before replacing the cover.
“The manufacturers that built them all agree on this; you should get it serviced once [a year] for heating and once for cooling," says Paul Mills, owner of Air Experts Heating & Cooling in Raleigh, North Carolina. "Tuning it up and checking it out is definitely recommended. Much like a car, if you ignore it, a lot more things break. You [will] extend the life of it and help prevent major breakdowns.”

Seattle furnaces can run nine months of the year. Based on the average temperatures in our area, if you compared running your furnace to a car it would get the equivalent of 1.8 million miles over its expected lifespan of 15 years. Your heating system will work hard for you, but like your car, doing routine and regular maintenance will keep it running smoothly, avoid problems, and keep your warranty intact.

You can help prevent issues with your system by scheduling routine maintenance on your furnace every year. During a maintenance visit, our technician will inspect and clean your furnace to help the system to run more smoothly and efficiently for the coming winter. You can have it done any time, but the maintenance is typically performed in the fall. Ask about our planned service agreement program!
Having a company looking out for all your heating and cooling needs shouldn’t mean that you’re stuck with any run-of-the-mill shop who cuts corners. Heating and cooling has been our excitement since 1962, and it’s evident in the work we provide to our customers. We’re committed to providing you the very greatest when it comes to all things HVAC, whether it’s service, maintenance or heating and cooling systems.
Whatever type of system you have, don't wait until it breaks down to do DIY furnace maintenance. A clean, well-adjusted heating system will save you money on fuel and prolong furnace life. Annual servicing is cheap—typically less than $100—especially when compared with the price of a new furnace. "You wouldn't wait more than a year to service your car," Richard says. "The heat in your house is just as important."

An electric furnace provides warmth by moving air over and through a series of coils. Ductwork and vents then distribute that air to the individual rooms in your home. Repair costs will depend on both the brand and the exact nature of the problem, but tend to be lower than some of the options above. That's because the units are small, and issues tend to be contained within the heating elements themselves. Expect to spend less than $300 on your electric furnace repair, depending on the exact problem.

We live in a recently completed townhouse that was built with double-wall construction. That construction method was touted by the builder as what would keep sound from penetrating between the units. But we can hear the next door neighbors' TV and stereo, and sometimes voices and even snoring, through the wall. While sometimes it's the volume, mostly it's the bass sounds coming through the wall. They say they don't hear us, but we keep our bass turned down. They crank up the bass, and they are not going to change that. They also are not going to do anything construction-wise to help from their side. What is the best way for us to try to block the low frequency/bass sounds from penetrating the existing wall into our side?
"Most people don't understand [and when they] put a new system in think, 'I’ve got a new system, so I won't have to maintain it,'" Conover said. "Well, there's nothing greater from the truth than that, because manufacturers require you to have regular maintenance and to have record of that. If you would ever have a warranty claim, that manufacturer has the ability to ask you for those service records. So not only does it make sense from a perspective of the longevity of it, but if you have a warranty, you want to make sure you keep it intact."
In a lot of homes, in Chicago Illinois, the initial HVAC installation was banged together to get it done. We’ve found big errors in heat system installations, like heat registers that aren’t hooked up and ducts that are open and pumping heat into your crawlspace or attic, or thermostats installed in the wrong place. Our Heating system technicians can survey your HVAC system and suggest improvements that will improve your comfort and save you wasted fuel bills.

This job involves removing the access panel, loosening a couple of bolts that hold the blower motor at the proper tension, and adjusting its distance or realigning the belt. In many cases, it’s a good idea to remove the belt and buy a replacement at a home center. Last, when reinstalling the belt, be careful not to over-tighten it; this can wear out the motor bearings.
